An unforgettable 8-day Himalayan adventure through the Great Himalayan National Park, featuring alpine meadows, dense forests, rugged landscapes, and the sacred Tirath Glacial Lake.
The GHNP Western Tragopan Trek is an immersive 14-day birding and wilderness expedition into the pristine landscapes of the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), Himachal Pradesh. Designed for nature lovers, birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and adventure travellers, this journey combines forest trekking, alpine meadows and extended birding sessions in some of the region’s most rewarding habitats.
The expedition begins in Sai Ropa and the Tirthan Valley, gradually progressing through the forests of Rolla and Shilt before reaching the high-altitude meadows of Nada Thatch. Dedicated exploration days at Shilt and Nada allow ample time for patient wildlife tracking and birding, with the elusive Western Tragopan as the principal target species.
Along the route, participants explore Cheer Pheasant habitat, dense Himalayan forests, ridges, waterfalls, alpine meadows and remote wilderness camps, while enjoying the changing landscapes and rich biodiversity of GHNP. The itinerary deliberately includes rest and full-day birding opportunities, making it less about covering distance and more about experiencing the Himalayan wilderness and maximising wildlife encounters.
