Itinerary
Approximately 9–10 km · 4–5 hours · Camp around 2,100 m
Begin the expedition by following the Tirthan River through the forested valley. Pass streams, waterfalls and rich temperate forest before reaching Rolla, near the entrance to the park's core trekking area. Settle into camp and prepare for the ascent.
Approximately 15–25 km easy cycling
Complete a gentle practice ride around the Manali area, subject to road and weather conditions. Test bicycle handling, establish riding formations and practise roadside repairs. Review hydration, nutrition, traffic safety and emergency procedures before entering higher terrain.
Approximately 55–75 km · Overnight in Keylong
Begin cycling towards the Atal Tunnel and enter the dramatic landscape of Lahaul. Continue past Sissu and Tandi towards Keylong. The route introduces the team to mountain-road riding and changing altitude. Use the support vehicle where needed and keep the pace conservative.
Approximately 22 km · Overnight in Jispa
Ride along the Bhaga River through open mountain valleys and small settlements. This shorter stage provides an opportunity to recover and adjust to the increasing altitude. Check bicycle condition, eat well and prepare for the more demanding stages ahead.
Approximately 30–40 km · Overnight at a suitable seasonal camp
Continue through Darcha and climb gradually into increasingly rugged high-altitude terrain. Follow the highway towards Zing Zing Bar, where the landscape becomes more exposed and vegetation sparse. Prepare for the Baralacha La crossing and monitor weather closely.
Approximately 45–55 km · Pass around 4,890 m
Begin early for the climb towards Baralacha La, a spectacular high mountain pass. Enjoy views of Suraj Tal and the surrounding snow-covered peaks where conditions allow. Descend towards Sarchu and rest at the designated seasonal camp. This stage is demanding because of altitude, cold and possible rough road conditions.
Approximately 75 km · Long and challenging stage
Ride through the dramatic Gata Loops and continue towards Nakee La and Lachung La before descending to Pang. This is one of the toughest stages because of cumulative climbing, altitude and distance. Maintain a slow pace, take frequent breaks and use the support vehicle if anyone becomes unwell.
Approximately 45 km · Overnight at an available seasonal camp
Leave Pang and ride across the vast More Plains, a striking high-altitude plateau surrounded by barren mountain ranges. The relatively open landscape can bring strong headwinds and rapidly changing weather. Continue towards Debring and rest before the final major pass.
Approximately 25–35 km · Pass around 5,328 m
Climb towards Tanglang La, the highest point of the expedition. Take the ascent slowly and stop only at safe locations. After reaching the pass, descend towards Rumtse through dramatic mountain terrain. Allow extra time for cold, wind and any rough road sections.
Approximately 45–55 km · Overnight in Upshi or nearby
Descend through the dramatic landscapes of the eastern Ladakh mountains towards Upshi and the Indus Valley. The changing scenery marks the transition from the high plateau to the wider inhabited valley. Enjoy a recovery evening and check the bicycles before the final ride.
Approximately 50–60 km · Expedition finish
Follow the Indus Valley towards Leh through barren mountains and traditional Ladakhi settlements. Arrive in Leh and celebrate completing the Manali–Ladakh cycling expedition. Check into a hotel, relax and enjoy the town's local cuisine.
Recovery, local exploration or onward travel
Keep the final day flexible for recovery, weather delays or onward flights. If time permits, explore Leh's historic streets and local markets. Arrange bicycle packing and transport in advance if flying home with your own bicycle.
